Herm only measures 1.5 miles long by 0.5 mile wide.  It may be small but there is an abundance of things to see. Spend a day on Herm and find time to go to the beach, have lunch in one of our restaurants, take a walk round the island and still find time to pop into our gift shops as you make your way back to the boat.

    Bird Life

If you are an expert birdwatcher, or are just beginning, Herm Island will provide you with a variety of birdwatching at all seasons of the year. Because Herm is an island, you will find here a complete contrast to your local birdwatching.

Almost 100 different species of bird are regularly seen on Herm Island.

    Beaches

As you will probably appreciate Herm's greatest attraction are its beaches. We recommend you discover them for yourself. But here is a glimpse of what you can expect to find.

Shell Beach - This sweep of golden sand stretches almost three quarters of a mile from a rocky point all the way to the most northerly tip of the island at Alderney Point and then curves around to dune-flanked, often deserted sandy bays. Shell beach is aptly named, for if you look closely you will see millions of tiny shells washed up by the Gulf Stream.

On the beach is a well-stocked beach café supplying all the essentials for a day in the sun. From ice creams and drinks to suntan lotion and inflatable toys. Despite its popularity, Shell Beach rarely gets crowded as there is plenty of space for everyone, even at high tide. At low tide rock pools and boulder strewn islets are revealed to delight explorers of all ages.

Fisherman’s Beach – A popular beach within easy reach of even the least energetic holiday maker. Its close proximity to The White House Hotel, Mermaid Tavern and Gift Shops means that nothing is more than a few minutes stroll away. For those with less time to spend walking to the farthest beaches, Fisherman’s is ideal to visit with its soft sand, endless rock pools and views of Guernsey and the harbour.

Hotel Beach – As its name suggests this beach is the closest to Herm’s White House Hotel. This part of Herm’s shoreline is often overlooked by visitors. It provides some quiet secluded spots and its harbour wall can act as a natural windbreak. An ideal beach for rock pooling it offers uninterrupted views of Guernsey and Jethou.

Oyster Beach – For seclusion and tranquillity, nothing can beat this part of the coastline. It is quite possible to spend an entire day here with little else but the sound of seagulls for company. For visitors who love solitude this beach is a must. The rocks at the north provide the perfect windbreak.

Bears' Beach – This is a delightful beach for sun worshipers seeking a spot of seclusion. Despite its relative closeness to the harbour area with the Hotel, Mermaid and shops, this is still a beach that is overlooked by many visitors to Herm. With its natural rocky windbreak to the north it affords uninterrupted views of Guernsey.

    Fishing

There is no better place to enjoy a spot of fishing than from Herm.  It offers a diverse range of opportunities to fish.  To the north there is an expanse of beaches, while to the south there are cliffs and rocky outcrops.  There is something for every angler on Herm, during all kinds of weather and at all states of the tide.

Herm is popular with anglers throughout the year.  The National Federation of Sea Anglers has regularly chosen Herm as the venue for their individual championship final.  There is often a group of anglers who come on the last boat from Guernsey, stay to fish all night and then return to Guernsey on the first boat next morning.  Similarly in late September or early October (depending on tides) each year we have several groups of anglers who come and stay in our self-catering cottages for a week and fish every day.

After a hard day angling, if cooking your catch doesn't appeal, then hot and cold food is available at The Mermaid Tavern, along with a refreshing pint of ale!

To add some variety to your fishing trip try one of the local fishing charter boats.  The experienced skippers will take you off for a day to places you would otherwise never get to.

Hire a self-catering cottage for a short break or spend a week or more indulging yourself with some marvellous angling opportunities on this beautiful island.
